THE SCHOOL OF LAY MINISTRY By Donna S. Trissel
The School of lay Ministry is a program through the New England Synod and is currently in its second year. It is a two-year program focused on Lutheran history, theology, and bible study. Students form study groups watching lessons on DVD and reading books that coincide with the lessons. The students decide when to meet and must complete the lessons assigned within a year. There are also two retreats held each year at Camp Calumet for the students to “regroup” in fellowship, learning, and fun.
Connie Slick and I are currently in our second year of this program and it is hard to believe that we will be graduating in May at the New England Synod Assembly. The friends we have made and the things we have studied are equally amazing. I have learned so much about the bible, Lutheran history and theology in the company of wonderful friends. Initially my goals in participating were really just to learn more about the bible and Lutheran theology but what I have gained from the journey and the new direction I’ve been pointed in I could not have even imagined when I initially signed up. I now read the bible very differently than when I first started. I listen to the sermons at church more closely and my relationship with God has been opened wider than ever before. It has helped in my discernment journey as well, and I have taken the steps forward to complete my bachelor’s degree to be eligible to seek candidacy to become a pastor. In the meantime I’m looking forward to using my training in our church. Pastor Linda and I are discussing different areas where I can help.
I encourage anyone who is interested in the School of Lay Ministry to talk with either Connie Slick or myself. It has been a wonderful experience that I highly recommend to everyone.
